Signs of Orofacial Dysfunction

Below are some signs or behaviors that can dramatically affect your oral health causing chronic fatigue, behavioral issues such as ADHD, overcrowding of teeth, limited tongue mobility, speech or swallowing difficulties. Myofunctional therapy can help address these issues.

Mouth Breathing

A narrow face, mouth breathing, low tongue posture, forward head posture, tired eyes, crooked teeth, crooked nose, short upper lip, receding chin, and a smaller airway-these are all airway red flags!

The mouth is for eating and speaking. Mouth breathing causes many issues short term and long term such as face disfigurement, high-arch palate, low tongue posture and dental issues.

Open Bite

Open bite is a sign of oral dysfunction. This is often from a digit sucking habit or other poor oral habits. This boy also has a crossbite.

Is there an opening in your bite at the front of your teeth or at the back side of your teeth? Does your tongue push on your teeth when you swallow?

Myofunctional therapy can help reduce a persons apnea-hypopnea index score for patients with sleep apnea and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome.

Sleep Obstruction

Are you tired daily? Do you toss and turn at night? Do you snore?

Tongue Tie (TOTs). LightScapel Dental CO2 laser was used for Loren Jaffe. Myofunctional therapy is vital for pre-operative and post-operative frenuloplasty. Tongue- tie, mouth breathing, low tongue posture, enlarged tonsils, narrow palate, grinding.

TOTs (Tethered Oral Tissues)

Also know as ankyloglossia. Do you have problems with speech? Can you remove food from your teeth after eating? Issues with eating? Where is your tongue resting in your mouth?

Thumb sucking causes poor lower jaw growth and development. Poor jaw development affects the airway, which affects the quality of life.

Thumb/Finger Sucking

A soothing habit and sometimes an airway issue. If continued, it can cause long term damage and development to the oral and facial structures.
