What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is a multilayered approach to restore function of the oral cavity, neck and face muscles. Muscle dysfunctions are rooted from discrepancies within the oral tissues, face, jaw and neck, which can cause long term issues with sleep, eating, speech and swallowing. Every person is unique which requires different forms of therapy.

The 4 main goals of orofacial myofunctional therapy are nasal breathing, lip seal, correct tongue posture and correct chewing pattern.

Sleep Apnea/Disorders

Snoring is not uncommon, but it is NOT normal. Snoring is the beginning stage of sleep disordered breathing. If we are not breathing well, we are not sleeping well, if we are not sleeping well, we are not living well.

Athletes

Whether you're preparing for a 5k, weight training, or simply wanting to improve your sports performance, nasal breathing will help you achieve improved strength, endurance and PR goals.

TMJD

Do you suffer from clenching or grinding your teeth? Neck tension, tight shoulders or headaches? When we use compensatory muscle movement, this results in overuse in other muscles creating aches or tenderness around the jaw affecting jaw function.

Airway Development

Do you suffer from constant post nasal drip, congestion, difficulty swallowing pills or eating certain foods? Enlarged tonsils, recurring strep throat, asthma or narrow (underdeveloped) jaw. There are many conditions that can affect the airway.

Myofunctional therapy isn't all about the tongue. Myofunctional therapy involves diaphragmatic breathing, posturing and overall awareness to create habitation. If we are nasal breathing with lips sealed, have correct tongue posture and proper swallow pattern, we are in perfect balance of nitric oxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange to sustain better whole body wellness.
